ESA Puts a Quantum Computer to Work on Real Earth-Observation Data
ESA's Φ-lab has installed Bell-1, a six-qubit silicon quantum computer built by Dublin's Equal1, inside its Earth observation data centre at ESRIN in Frascati, Italy. The system arrived this week and will run for a year, testing whether quantum algorithms can meaningfully speed up processing of satellite radar and imaging data, not just win a demonstration circuit.
Most European quantum news this year has been about qubit counts and funding rounds. This is different: a national space agency wired quantum hardware directly into an operational data pipeline, with concrete tasks in mind, synthetic aperture radar processing and satellite mission planning, instead of a lab exercise.
Equal1's low-power, rack-mounted design, the kind of engineering compromise that let it slot into existing ESA infrastructure without a dedicated cooling hall, matters here as much as the qubit count.
Whether Bell-1 produces a genuine speed-up on real Earth observation workloads by the end of this pilot will tell Europe more about where quantum computing actually helps than another qubit-count press release would.

A Czech Antibody Gets FDA Fast Track While Europe's Own Reform Is Still Being Drafted
SOTIO Biotech, the Prague-based oncology company owned by PPF Group, said on July 14 that the FDA granted Fast Track designation to SOT109, an antibody-drug conjugate targeting CDH17, a protein expressed in more than 90% of colorectal cancers. The company expects to start a Phase 1/2 trial in the third quarter.
Fast Track is a US tool, not a European one. Central and Eastern European biotechs increasingly chase US regulatory speed rather than wait on Brussels, which is still consulting on how to shorten trial timelines under its own Biotech Act.
Spain's CriteriaCaixa Commits €300 Million to Iberian Biotech and Deep Tech Before Picking a Company
CriteriaCaixa, the investment arm of Spain's La Caixa banking foundation, rebranded its venture unit as Criteria Capital Risc on July 13. It committed €300 million through 2030 across two funds, one for biotech and health, one for AI, cybersecurity and other deep tech, focused on Spain and Portugal with room to invest elsewhere in Europe and North America.
This is capital looking for a portfolio, not a portfolio looking for capital. The fund launched before naming a single investment, which says Iberian deep tech now has enough deal flow that a domestic institutional investor will build the vehicle first and find the companies after.

Quobly Turns Its Quantum Chip Into a Security Product, Not Just a Roadmap Item
Quobly, the French silicon quantum computing startup that raised €115 million in June, signed a $5 million commercial agreement on July 10 with Swiss-listed SEALSQ. The deal integrates post-quantum cryptography and hardware root-of-trust technology into Quobly's Alloy Pioneer processor, due on the cloud by the end of 2026.
This is Quobly's third appearance in this briefing since June, each time in a different register: a funding round, a sovereign-cloud placement, now a security supply-chain deal. Building in cryptography now rather than retrofitting it later fits a pattern regulators keep pushing: protect against what a working quantum computer could eventually break before it exists, not after.

Swiss Satellite Maker SWISSto12 Raises $70 Million as Its Order Book Outgrows Its Factory
SWISSto12 closed a $70 million Series C on July 16 to scale manufacturing for its HummingSat small geostationary satellites. The company has signed seven HummingSat contracts with operators including SES and Viasat, on top of $84.8 million in ESA support awarded in January, and reports 2025 revenue of $140 million against total contract value above $500 million.
A 110% compound annual growth rate since 2022 means the constraint has shifted from selling the product to building it fast enough. That is a rarer problem in European space than a funding gap, and a healthier one.

Finland's Hyperion Robotics Raises €6.4 Million to Turn Microfactories Into an Export Product
Hyperion Robotics, based in Espoo, closed a €6.4 million round on July 16, co-led by Course Corrected and the European Innovation Council Fund, bringing its total funding to roughly €17.4 million. The company builds robotic microfactories that print infrastructure components; its first UK site, in Flixborough, will make parts for energy, water and carbon-capture projects with steel producer LKAB.
The round marks a shift from project-by-project delivery to standing factories that ship product regardless of who is asking. That is the model that decides whether a construction-robotics startup becomes an infrastructure company or stays a contractor.

Brussels Clears €659 Million for Two German Chip Plants, Betting on Materials Nobody Else Is Racing to Make
The European Commission approved €659 million in German state aid on July 14 for four semiconductor facilities. The largest tranches went to Element 3-5, a silicon carbide specialist building a €353 million epitaxial wafer plant in Baesweiler, and Vishay Siliconix, receiving €214 million for a device facility in Itzehoe.
Silicon carbide and other wide-bandgap materials sit outside the leading-edge chip race that dominates most Chips Act coverage, but they are what electric vehicles, grid electronics and defense systems actually need more of. Funding unglamorous capacity that nobody else is racing to build is a quieter form of strategic autonomy than chasing the next process node, and possibly a more durable one.

Isar Aerospace's Spectrum Still Hasn't Reached Orbit, and July 31 Is the New Line
Spectrum's second flight remains scheduled for no earlier than July 31, after a string of scrubs stretching back to January that have each pushed the date by weeks. Nothing in this week's gathering moved that needle: no new static fire, no new contract riding on the outcome beyond the Nova Scotia and Planet deals already signed.
Every projection tied to Isar's expansion, in Canada and now with satellite customers booking rides before a single orbital success, still assumes this flight works. Watch whether July 31 holds any better than the five dates before it.
