ZuriQ, an ETH Zürich spinout, raised $25.5 million to scale a quantum processor built on a two-dimensional trapped-ion architecture instead of the one-dimensional ion chains the industry defaulted to. Static magnetic fields hold ions in place instead of oscillating electric ones, letting them move freely across the chip rather than through the junctions that make conventional designs hard to scale.
The company already has a working nine-ion prototype fabricated with Infineon on standard semiconductor lines. It is a small proof, but it is the kind of small proof that decides which architecture gets to be boring by 2030.

Vilnius' Sigvi raises to make car rental fully automated
Sigvi, a Vilnius-based startup, raised €1.2 million in pre-seed funding led by Superhero Capital to scale an AI system that prices and manages vehicles for independent rental fleets. The company already manages over 200 cars after launching in Poland in June, and wants to reach 2,000 within two years.
The pitch is narrow on purpose: automate the pricing and logistics layer that fragmented fleet operators cannot afford to build themselves. Lithuania rarely produces headline rounds; this one is a bet on operational software rather than a flashy vertical.
A British defence startup builds war games for machines, not people
Agon emerged from stealth with $30 million, split between a $7 million pre-seed from Lakestar and 201 Ventures and a $23 million seed from Lux Capital and Northzone. The company builds a simulated battlefield where autonomous weapons systems train against each other before anyone fields them.
Founder Tristam Constant spent five years at Anduril's European arm before this; the company's job is finding the vulnerabilities in an AI model's targeting logic before an adversary does. It is one of the largest European defence-tech seed rounds this year, and a sign of how much of the current defence buildout is really software procurement.
The Exploration Company's valuation talks would double it again
Bessemer and Atomico are in advanced talks to co-lead a new round for The Exploration Company at close to a $2 billion valuation, Sifted reported July 27. The Franco-German startup builds reusable space capsules and recently opened its first US laboratory.
Nothing is signed. But two investors with strong European track records circling a reusable-capsule maker at that price says something about how scarce credible hardware bets have become.

Milan's Beelzebub fights AI hackers with AI-built decoys
Beelzebub, a Milan-based cybersecurity startup, raised €3 million in seed funding led by United Ventures to scale a platform that lures attackers into fake servers, databases and cloud systems built to look real. The round follows a €300,000 pre-seed and brings founder Mario Candela's total funding to €3.3 million.
The company is betting that as attackers automate vulnerability discovery with AI, defence has to automate deception at the same speed. It will use the funding to open offices in Rome and San Francisco and target firms under the EU's NIS2 cybersecurity rules.

Legora's fifth acquisition of the year says the market has already consolidated
Legora, the Stockholm-based legal AI company, acquired Wexler, a smaller legal AI startup, marking its fifth acquisition in 2026 alone. Legora has raised over $866 million total, with Nvidia among its backers.
A company with that much capital still buying five competitors in seven months is telling you legal AI's real competition is no longer feature parity, it is who owns the customer relationships first.

A BAE engineer builds a nuclear reactor around a jet turbine, not the other way round
Nuclear Turbines, a Manchester spinout from BAE Systems, raised £15 million led by IQ Capital to build compact modular reactors that swap conventional steam turbines for high-temperature turbine technology borrowed from jet engines. Co-founder Jeremy Owston, a former BAE principal engineer, designed the reactor around the cheapest way to generate power rather than starting from reactor physics.
The target is roughly a fifth of today's nuclear generation costs, small enough to sit behind the meter at a data centre or factory. Whether that survives contact with a regulator is the harder question.

Bristol's wind-inspection drones add offshore to their range
Perceptual Robotics, a Bristol University spinout, secured over £4 million from Investing for Purpose, Loggerhead Ventures and One Planet Capital, alongside Innovate UK support, to expand its autonomous drone inspection software for wind turbines into offshore markets.
Offshore turbines are harder and more expensive to inspect manually than onshore ones, which is exactly where automated inspection software earns its margin.

Tübingen's smallest ivory birds rewrite what Ice Age hands could do
Archaeologists from the University of Tübingen recovered two 40,000-year-old ivory bird figurines at Hohle Fels Cave in southwestern Germany, the smallest sculptures found at the site to date. Excavation director Nicholas Conard called it the year's most significant find.
The carvings come from the same Aurignacian layers that produced some of the earliest known figurative art, dated to when modern humans first reached the Upper Danube. Miniaturisation at that scale, this early, argues for craft skill that arrived with people rather than developing locally over millennia.

A Cambridge platform tries to make lung scans a clinical trial endpoint
Qureight, founded by a pulmonologist and a radiologist, raised $20 million in a Series B led by Molten Ventures to build a 3D deep-learning platform that extracts precision measurements from lung and heart scans for drug trials. The funding will launch a dedicated AI imaging lab and extend the model into asthma, pulmonary hypertension and bronchiectasis.
Imaging has long been a supporting player in trial design; Qureight's bet is that it can become the primary endpoint drugmakers measure against.

Greyparrot wants its cameras to account for a million tons of waste
Greyparrot, a London company whose AI cameras identify materials on recycling lines in real time, raised $27 million after its platform passed one trillion detected waste objects. The new round targets abating more than a million tons of waste by 2030, with clients including Veolia, Biffa and Unilever already running the system.
Watch whether that 2030 target holds as the company expands its Analyzer network across North America alongside Europe, and whether waste data becomes the compliance layer regulators lean on for Extended Producer Responsibility rules.
