European deep tech kept signing deals this week that run ahead of what the underlying technology has actually proven. A satellite operator booked a launch before the rocket it's flying on has reached orbit. Spain's government took a stake in a chip designer years from its first product. The pattern is capital and contracts moving first, capability expected to catch up.

Isar Aerospace Wins a Launch Contract While Spectrum Still Hasn't Reached Orbit

Isar Aerospace and Planet announced a launch agreement on July 2 covering one of Planet's next-generation Pelican satellites, targeting liftoff as early as late 2026 from Andøya Spaceport in Norway. The satellite will be built at Planet's new manufacturing site in Berlin, making this the first pairing of a German-built satellite with a German-built rocket.

The deal lands two weeks after Isar's second orbital attempt scrubbed twice more in mid-June, extending a run of aborts that started with Spectrum's failed 2025 debut. Planet is committing to Isar's timeline anyway, with options attached for further launches beyond this one.

Paying customers booking a vehicle that hasn't reached orbit yet isn't unheard of in launch markets, but it raises what's riding on Isar's next attempt. A scrub now delays a customer's satellite programme, not just investor patience.

EU Regulator Clears Six Medicines, Including a Rett Syndrome First

The EMA's human medicines committee recommended six new medicines for approval on June 26, closing out its June 22-25 meeting. The list includes a flu vaccine for people 50 and older, a Parkinson's therapy, a type 2 diabetes treatment, and Daybu, the first medicine aimed at the neurobehavioural symptoms of Rett syndrome in patients aged five and up.

Two biosimilars cleared alongside them, including one for preventing bone complications in advanced cancer. The committee also rejected three applications, among them a tumour-infiltrating lymphocyte therapy for advanced melanoma.

That mix of approvals and rejections is a useful marker as Europe's Biotech Act pushes for faster trial timelines: the aim is speed, not looser standards.

Ipsen Buys Swiss Rare-Disease Biotech Memo Therapeutics for Up to €700 Million

Ipsen agreed on July 1 to acquire Memo Therapeutics, a Swiss biotech developing potravitug, a Phase II antibody against BK polyomavirus infection in kidney transplant patients. Memo shareholders get €200 million at closing, with the rest tied to development and sales milestones.

Swiss biotech's exit path increasingly runs through acquisition by larger European pharma rather than an IPO. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter, pending regulatory clearance.

Pasqal Turns a Quantum Processor Into a Slurm-Schedulable Resource

Pasqal published details on June 26 of its full-stack integration work connecting neutral-atom quantum processors to standard HPC job schedulers, letting researchers request quantum time through Slurm the same way they request CPU or GPU nodes. The approach, built around Pasqal's open-source Warden orchestration layer, already runs on Italy's Leonardo supercomputer.

Separately, the Open Compute Project Foundation set out a framework on June 27 for integrating quantum processing units into standard data centre racks, covering thermal, electrical, and mechanical specifications. Both moves point the same direction: treating quantum hardware as an add-on to existing infrastructure rather than a separate facility.

Spain Takes a Stake in Chipmaker Openchip With €115 Million

Spain's state investment vehicle SETT backed Barcelona-based chip designer Openchip with €115 million, authorised by the Council of Ministers on June 29. The Catalan company designs high-performance, energy-efficient chips aimed at AI and HPC workloads, and the investment brings the Spanish government directly into its shareholder base.

It's a small-scale preview of what Chips Act 2.0 is trying to standardise across the EU: state capital going into design houses, not just fabs, years before those chips reach volume production.

Norway's Six Robotics Raises €12 Million for Drone Swarm Software After Army Deployment

Six Robotics, a Norwegian startup building coordination software for unmanned systems, closed a €12 million round on June 29 led by DTCP Defence, with Denmark's export credit fund and Copenhagen's Scale Capital also participating. The Norwegian Army had already fielded the company's Valkyrie drone swarms, developed with the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment, ahead of this funding.

Deployment coming before the funding round, rather than after, is unusual for a seed-stage robotics company; it suggests defence customers are now willing to move faster than venture capital.

The European Commission closed its consultation window on the forthcoming Advanced Materials Act in January and is targeting a formal proposal in the fourth quarter of 2026. The act aims to cut the time between lab-scale material design and commercial-scale production, an area where Europe has consistently lost ground to Asian and US manufacturers.

Watch whether the Q4 proposal includes concrete permitting and scale-up funding mechanisms, or repeats the Chips Act's early pattern of strong targets without matching execution tools.
