Universal Quantum is a University of Sussex spin-out building trapped-ion quantum computers as modules linked by its own interconnect, so a machine scales by adding chips. It was founded in 2018 by Sebastian Weidt and Winfried Hensinger, and is delivering a €68 million contract for the German Aerospace Center (DLR). On 8 October 2026 it raised a Series A of more than $100 million, co-led by DCVC and Firgun Ventures, the largest a UK quantum company has raised, to fund a research centre in Singapore and growth in Hamburg, the US, and Japan.
