SMA Solar Technology is a German maker of solar and battery inverters, based in Niestetal near Kassel and listed in Frankfurt.
In September 2026 its Sunny Central Storage UP-S became the first battery inverter certified under version 2.1 of the VDE FNN guideline for grid-forming plants, the certificate German transmission operators require before paying for inertia. That opens a revenue stream for batteries that used to come free from the spinning mass of coal and gas turbines.
