Salzgitter is Germany's second-largest steelmaker, based in Salzgitter in Lower Saxony. Its SALCOS programme aims to replace blast furnaces with hydrogen-based direct reduction; the first stage is due in 2027, while later stages were pushed back three years in 2025.
In September 2026 its subsidiary Salzgitter Flachstahl signed a long-term hybrid supply deal with Zelestra for 147 MW of solar and 79 MW / 237 MWh of battery storage in Brandenburg and Thuringia, about 158 GWh a year, with Salzgitter controlling battery dispatch.
