In April 2026 the European Commission proposed measures requiring Google to share search engine data with third parties, a move that could structurally alter the economics of search competition in Europe. The proposal followed €500M and €200M fines on Apple and Meta, pushing total EU penalties on US tech past $7 billion over two years. In July 2026 the Commission moved to fine parent company Alphabet several hundred million euros more, over Search self-preferencing and Play Store anti-steering rules, timed to land before the Commission's August recess.
