GEMA is Germany's state-mandated collecting society for musical performing and reproduction rights, representing the repertoire of composers, lyricists and publishers. It has become the most active European litigant testing whether AI model training requires a licence. In July 2026 the Munich Regional Court largely upheld its case against Suno, ruling that training a music generator on GEMA-represented works infringed copyright even though the training itself ran in the United States.
