- Sodium-ion commitment
- 5GWh across Europe with Alfen (August 2026)
CATL, or Contemporary Amperex Technology, is the world's largest battery manufacturer, headquartered in Ningde in China's Fujian province and founded in 2011. It supplies cells to most major European carmakers and is building assembly capacity inside the EU.
In August 2026 it agreed with Dutch supplier Alfen to deploy 5GWh of sodium-ion stationary storage across Europe, extending a lithium-ion partnership the two signed in 2023. Its sodium-ion cells carry no cobalt or nickel and are claimed to run 30% to 40% cheaper than lithium iron phosphate.
