BioNTech is the Mainz biotechnology company that co-developed the first approved mRNA COVID-19 vaccine with Pfizer, and has spent the proceeds rebuilding itself as an oncology business. Founded in 2008 by Ugur Sahin and Ozlem Tureci, it now runs more than sixteen lung cancer trials, five of them Phase III, across mRNA immunotherapies, bispecifics and antibody-drug conjugates. At the World Conference on Lung Cancer in September 2026 it reported Phase III overall survival of 18.5 months for gotistobart against 10.0 for docetaxel, alongside early combination data for pumitamig, the asset Bristol Myers Squibb paid USD 1.5 billion upfront to share in 2025.
