Advanced Electric Machines builds electric motors that use no permanent magnets and no rare earth materials, and replaces copper windings with aluminium. Spun out of Newcastle University in 2017 by James Widmer and Andy Steven, it manufactures at commercial scale in Washington, in the north east of England, for passenger cars, motorcycles, trucks, buses, construction machinery, and marine applications. In August 2026 it raised £16 million led by existing shareholders including Barclays Climate Ventures, Northstar Ventures, and the Low Carbon Innovation Fund, with loan support from Innovate UK.
